What Challenges Did the Watsonville Parking Garage Mural Project Face?
For previous murals in Watsonville, Crocetti and her students sourced tile from the scraps of nearby Rinaldi Tile & Marble. Cladding the outside of an entire parking structure would require a much higher volume of material. Rick Rinaldi, CEO of Rinaldi Tile & Marble, introduced Kathleen to Fireclay Tile, a local manufacturer that donated additional materials to the cause. Meanwhile, Rinaldi provided installation assistance when it became apparent that the mural would need more labor.
Watsonville is prone to earthquakes, sitting atop a smaller fault and between the notorious San Andreas and San Gregorio faults. Moreover, the garage is almost constantly in motion thanks to dynamic loads of vehicles moving throughout.
Thus, the installation itself would rely on LATICRETE® products, those tested and trusted by Rinaldi Tile & Marble.
“LATICRETE is Rinaldi’s favorite supplier,” said Roberts-Breubeck. “We use a lot of their installation materials. We like their service and like what we get back.”
Preparation was necessary to facilitate proper tile adhesion. After the city power washed the garage, installation began in 2019.
