How do I install 9235 Waterproofing Membrane?
9235 Waterproofing Membrane is a cold-applied, liquid rubber polymer that is used with Waterproofing/Anti-Fracture Fabric. The liquid is applied with a paint roller or paint brush and the fabric is embedded into the liquid until the liquid bleeds through the fabric. A top coat of the 9235 Waterproofing Membrane liquid is immediately applied over the fabric. When dry to the touch, an additional coat of 9235 Waterproofing Membrane liquid is applied to create a seamless membrane. LATASILTM is applied at adjoining surfaces, drains connections and pipe penetrations.

How do I install HYDRO BAN®?
HYDRO BAN® is a cold-applied, liquid rubber polymer which is applied with a paint roller, paint brush or airless paint sprayer. No membrane reinforcing fabric is typically required. The first liquid coat must be completely dry to the touch prior to applying the second coat of membrane liquid. HYDRO BAN will change from a sage green color to an olive green color when dry. The second liquid coat can then be applied and must also dry to the touch. A LATICRETE Latex-fortified thin-set (e.g. 254 Platinum) may be used to install most types of tile or stone directly to the HYDRO BAN. Please refer to the HYDRO BAN data sheet and HYDRO BAN Installation Instructions for more complete information.

How long can I leave a LATICRETE membrane exposed before covering it?
HYDRO BAN®, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane, Blue 92 Anti-Fracture Membrane, HYDRO BARRIERTM, and LATAPOXY® Waterproof Flashing Mortar must be covered by tile, stone, or other suitable finish material within 30 days. However, if the finish material is not yet available for installation, a skim coat of a latex fortified thin-set (e.g. 254 Platinum) will help protect the installation until the veneer finish material is available. The installation of the tile, stone or other suitable material can take place onto the hardened skim coat.

How do I treat the drains when using HYDRO BAN® or LATICRETE 9235 Waterproofing Membrane?
You should use a 2-part clamping ring style drain (per ASME 112.6.3). HYDRO BAN® and 9235 Waterproofing Membrane must be installed down into the drain assembly and clamped down between the clamping ring of the drain. Once the waterproofing membrane is dry to the touch, use LATASILTM and put a continuous bead of sealant between the waterproofing membrane and the clamping ring before bolting down the clamping ring.

Can you install vinyl tile over HYDRO BAN® or 9235 Waterproofing Membrane?
Yes - after the HYDRO BAN® or 9235 Waterproofing Membrane is installed and allowed to dry, use a latex based vinyl adhesive to adhere the vinyl tile to the membrane. Ensure that the adhesive contains no solvents. If there is a question as to the compatibility of the vinyl adhesive and the membrane, apply a continuous 1/8" (3mm) thick coating of a LATICRETE liquid latex thinset mortar to the membrane and allow to harden. Then install the vinyl flooring.

Can I install HYDRO BAN®, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane or any other LATICRETE membrane over plywood in exterior applications?
No! HYDRO BAN®, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane and all other LATICRETE membranes are not intended for this installation. You must use the Plaza and Deck System for these applications.

THICK BED INSTALLATION

When do I need to install a mortar bed on a floor?

A mortar bed is required for horizontal installations when you encounter any of the following conditions on a project.
1. Slope must be created to a drain, trench, gutter, etc... and if the slope cannot be established within the subfloor.
2. The installation of ungauged (varying thickness) tile or stone requiring the wet set method (ANSI A108.1A).
3. When a floor surface is contaminated, damaged or otherwise cannot accept direct bonding (e.g. spider web cracks, painted or oil soaked concrete).
4. When elevations must be met to match existing flooring or adjacent floors.

There are two types of mortar beds:
a) Bonded
b) Non-bonded
Which type of mortar bed to use depends on many factors. Typically, the bonded system is used when the underlying substrate is structurally sound, clean and free of all potential bond inhibiting materials (e.g. concrete curing compounds, sealers, oil, old flooring adhesives, paint, etc...). A non-bonded mortar bed is used when the substrate is likely to be subject to movement, or is contaminated with bond inhibiting materials. In either case, 3701 Fortified Mortar Bed is ideal for any application where a high strength mortar bed is required.

How do I prepare a wall to receive ceramic tile?
Walls to receive tile or stone must be made smooth and plumb. Exterior walls typically require a waterproofing membrane and the proper placement of a suitable vapor retarder/vapor barrier. It is the responsibility of the project design professional(s) to specify and place all wall installation components. If the wall needs a leveling coat refer to one of the applications listed below:

How do I install tile or stone over a mortar bed?
There are two options.

“Cured” Mortar Bed - Allow the mortar bed to harden and then waterproof or thin set the tiles onto the mortar bed using a LATICRETE Liquid Latex Fortified or LATICRETE Polymer Fortified Thin-set mortar system (ANSI A108.1B).

“Green” Mortar Bed - Install the tile or stone onto the fresh mortar bed by applying a slurry bond coat (e.g. 254 Platinum) directly onto the "green" mortar bed and to the backs of the tile or stone. Place the tiles into the wet slurry bond coat and beat/level into the mortar bed with a beating block or rubber mallet until the desired elevation is met and the tile or stone is fully bedded (ANSI A108.1A).
